Description

This entry presents Benomyl (C14H18N4O3; CAS 17804-35-2; PubChem CID 28780) as a 3D-printable ball-and-stick model in which every atom carries its engraved element symbol (C, H, N, O), so the model can be read without a colour key. Atomic coordinates come from the PubChem-computed 3D conformer (not an experimental crystal structure); coordinates and connectivity are unchanged.

Biological relevance: Benomyl is a fungicide recorded as a tubulin modulator with anthelmintic activity, and also as a male reproductive and developmental toxicant (source: Wikidata Q420172, retrieved 2026-10-10).

Structure at a glance

  • 39 atoms: 14 C, 18 H, 4 N, 3 O

  • 40 bonds: 28 single, 2 double, 10 aromatic

  • Two rings (one 5-membered and one 6-membered), fused along a shared edge, both aromatic

  • Functional groups: one carbamate group (-NH-CO-O-), one urea linkage (-N-CO-N-) and one pyridine-type ring nitrogen

  • Two hydrogen-bond donors and four acceptors (computed)

  • Fraction of sp3-hybridised (tetrahedral) carbon atoms: 0.36 (computed)

Use in teaching

  • Counting task: students tally the engraved symbols (14 C, 18 H, 4 N, 3 O; 39 atoms) and rebuild the formula C14H18N4O3 from the model alone.

  • Aromaticity: identify the two aromatic rings and the 10 bonds recorded as aromatic.

  • Functional groups: find the carbamate group (-NH-CO-O-), the urea linkage (-N-CO-N-) and the pyridine-type ring nitrogen on the model and name each one.

File and printing

STL mesh of 493,622 triangles, a closed (watertight) single solid. Coordinates are in ångström and STL stores no unit, so scale the model deliberately in your slicer. Measured bounding box: 9.527 × 10.911 × 8.787 Å; at scale factor 10 (1 Å to 10 mm, file read in millimetres) the print measures about 95.3 × 109.1 × 87.9 mm. SHA-256: 4129edcf3b032f57564ee01f38a36e39040172e0213a141ee1b5f1570b54bde3.

Validation

  • InChIKey identical to the PubChem record (PubChem FTP SDF, file dated 2026-10-08): RIOXQFHNBCKOKP-UHFFFAOYSA-N

  • Molecular formula and hydrogen-bond donor/acceptor counts identical to PubChem

  • Mesh: triangle count in the header equals the actual count; 0 edges not shared by exactly two triangles; 1 connected solid; SHA-256 equal to the published file
