Description
This 3D-printed syringe handle is designed to enable safe, one-handed anterior chamber (AC) paracentesis using standard 1-mL syringes. AC paracentesis is a common ophthalmic procedure used for diagnosis (e.g., uveitis, lymphoma, endophthalmitis) and therapeutic decompression in glaucoma. Conventional techniques often require both hands or an assistant, introducing ergonomic challenges and increasing the risk of intraocular injury or over-aspiration.
To address these limitations, we developed a lightweight, low-cost handle that allows the operator to retract the syringe plunger with one finger while stabilizing the eye with the other hand. The handle includes a built-in stop to prevent over-extraction. In a pilot randomized wet-lab study using porcine eyes, this device demonstrated improved safety, accuracy, and user preference compared to the conventional two-handed method.
The design is compatible with standard 1-mL BD® Tuberculin Syringes.
