Description
Nearly complete comfort!! The Ear Angel consists of a simple "halo and two wings" but can drastically reduce the fatigue associated with numerous days in a surgical mask by completely removing strain on the ears.
This design applies to the styles of PPE facemasks that are secured in place by way of two elastic loops, with each looping behind one ear. This includes many surgical masks and the vast majority of the homemade cloth COVID pandemic masks. The design is very simple, functional, adaptable, and can be worn in combination with many other types of head gear, glasses, head coverings, long or short hair, etc. They can be produced in a number of different polymers, the majority of which can be easily sterilized using numerous methods. The Ear Angel works well on adults and children.
We began producing them with 7”, 6.5”, and 6” halos. The 7” and 6” seem to fit most adults and children, respectively, and the design can be easily modified to suit. When 3D printed using the FFF process and nylon filament we have gotten excellent results and feedback! Printed with nylon, the Ear Angel is quite flexible as well as durable and I'm sure there are numerous other applicable filaments/materials available. We had some ABS on hand so we tried that as well but, while still effective, they were more rigid which made them less durable and comfortable. The design seems well suited for other CNC processes as well (lasers, routers, etc.) so I included the .png and .dxf. If you use one of these, please let us know what process and material you use and how it works out.
We’ve printed dozens of the strip-style mask clasps for our local medical community who have been VERY thankful for them! The strip-style designs are excellent because they resolve a significant portion of the original issue (ear fatigue) while being rapidly producible. However, when worn for extended periods the strip-style designs still tend to result in a significant amount of pressure and strain on the upper or lower-ear which, over time, becomes just as frustrating and painful as before. My goal was to completely resolve that strain for the folks who have no choice but to regularly wear this type of mask for long periods. In doing so I also found that the design is easily downsized and works great for children as well. They are also very helpful as an adapter for children that must wear adult sized masks (see images), increasing safety, comfort, and efficiency. My goal now is to provide as many as possible to our amazing medical workers, nursing home and elderly care staff, and especially any and every child stuck wearing the masks on a daily basis! With that end in mind, this design is published under GNU’s GPLv3 Public License which essentially states that any person may use, copy, share, and share changes you’ve made to these files so long as you never charge money for this file and never change the file into something that you charge money for.
