Description

Redesigned 3d printed face shield with forehead hood. New design eliminates dog ear style of lateral clear shield attachment points. Dog ear attachment points for clear shield on old design tended to crack where dog ear meets frame when repeatedly flexed, as done when repeatedly replacing clear shield or repeatedly donning and doffing. This design moves attachment point to frame and provides additional strength with double hoop that acts as spring when flexed.  Headband attachment points reinforced for added strength. Designed to fit standard 3 hole punch for attachment for clear shield.  Attachment pegs modified to be slightly larger than the 7.4mm standard hole punch @ 7.8mm thus ensuring snug fit and no need for glue, clips or tape. Prototype shown in photos uses 5mm thermal laminating pouches (empty run through laminator) as they are more durable than 3 hole punch page protectors and do not require tape to reinforce top edge ( reducing chance of contamination with sticky or porous surfaces). Laminating sheets remain easily available through online purchase.

Use:

Healthcare workers face critical shortages of PPE. This face shield can be used to limit exposure to contaminants and bodily fluids from droplet, aerosol, splash and splatter and has very low cost per unit.

Face shield is easily assembled of easily obtained materials, durable, easy to don and doff and easily cleaned.

Clear shield is easily replaced if worn or damaged.

 Hood protects from above.

Offers better protection than standard goggles.

Construction is completed with easily obtained material:

  Frame- PLA , PETG, ABS

Clear shield -5 mil. Laminating sheets or 3 hole page protectors

Headband- elastic band, coban, hair ties or non latex rubber bands.

Assembly:  attach clear shield to frame , attach headband to frame.

Clear shield is standard US 3 hole punch (110mm between hole centers) this prototype uses 5 mil. Laminating sheets (run through laminator empty), standard page protectors can be used but are not as durable – attached by placing holes over pegs.

Head band can be made of multiple materials: elastic band, coban, hair ties, thin bungie cord or non-latex rubber bands.

Optional fore head padding - weather strip, tape or foam padding
