Description

During our design discussion in our development of the IC3D Budmen Face Shield - Livingston Mod in March 2020, we discussed the major drawback of the top-open face shield designs that they have exposure from the aerosol and splatter from the top without having. With a very challenging supply situation, we wanted to create a top shield without using any additional 3D printed parts to conserve the 3D printing time and material. We experimented with different top shield designs using plastic sheets to limit such exposure while still maintaining the top ventilation of such top-open designs. Finally, we came up with the “seamless top shield” concept that reduces the exposure from the top while keeping the space toward the back open to provide ventilation. By having the seamless top shield, it allows us to consider more top-open face shield designs including many of the skeletal / minimalist designs to be used in clinical settings. This will help us to scale up the productions of 3D printed face shields to address the severe shortage situation.

 

This Livingston Seamless Top Shield for top-open face shields v2.0 includes (template files are located under the "Extras" tab):

  • Template for IC3D Budmen and all other “Budmen” variants including our IC3D Budmen Face Shield - Livingston Mod

  • Template for 4-hole Prusa face shields and all other variants that have the rounded area for the sheet attachment and the hole positions identical to Prusa.

 

Key elements of the design

  • Use a plastic sheet that is cut into a shape rather than using a 3D printed part. This saves our 3D printing resources for producing more shields. 

  • Seamless within the area of the top shield to provide a contiguous barrier without cuts or seams that require having to apply long sections of specialized tape that is suitable for clinical use.  

  • The edge of the top shields is behind the normal front sheet.

  • Attachable to the face shield tabs or hooks without additional 3D printed parts. Removable from the face shield bracket to allow the top shield to be cleaned.

 

NOTE: The 3D model included in this design is the IC3D Budmen Face Shield - Livingston Mod v2.0 to show a compatible model. The model is just a sample of what can fit with our top shield designs. Do not use a 3D model from this page. Go to the source for the most up to date of the 3D face shield you want to print. Only use the template files included in this design in PDF format for cutting.
